7 out of 10 US Children Low in Vitamin D

Once previously thought to only maintain bone health by regulating calcium status, recent research has found vitamin D does a lot more than boost bones.  For the past several years, vitamin D has been one of the most popular vitamins studied, largely because so little was known about it and many people are deficient. Children are particularly at risk for vitamin D deficiency and a recent study found that a shocking number of children are indeed deficient.

Boston University Study Finds Fruit and Vegetable Intake Reduces Risk of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Is Dephytinization from Infant Cereals Beneficial to the Nutrition Absorption?

When taking a hard look at nutrient absorption, it can be very confusing as vitamins and minerals are actually quite complex.  As discussed in the Boosting Iron during Pregnancy post, some nutrients act as helpers of iron absorption while others hinder.  These symbiotic relationships are abundant in the natural world, and although seemingly counterproductive they are indeed as Mother Nature intended.

Journal of Food Science reports New Gluten Free French bread Underway for Celiac Disease Patients

Anyone on a gluten free diet understands that every once in a while, you crave a piece of child nutrition, child healthbread.  Either to make a sandwich, dip into some soup, or a break off a piece of a warm French style baguette; having a piece of bread feels reminiscent of days gone by. The taste of most gluten free breads take a while to get used to because the texture is so different, but a new study reported to be working on a solution to this dilemma.

Study finds One-third of Kids Take Vitamins

A walk through the supplement department of any health food store or pharmacy can be a baby development, organic baby foodbit overwhelming.  While the majority of the vitamins we need come from the foods we eat, over the past year doctors and health experts alike have suggested supplementing certain nutrients that vulnerable populations like expecting women and children might not get enough of from diet alone like vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids.

How to Feed the Vegetarian Child

The CDC recently released a survey which found that about 1 in 200 children are vegetarians.  This number is growing quickly and may be even higher as CDC researchersbaby nutrition, organic baby food speculate teens are even more likely to be vegetarian because they make more of their own food choices.  The study brings up an interesting question: can a child eat healthy as a vegetarian?  Is it healthier to be a vegetarian?

CDC Survey Says 1 in 200 U.S Kids are Vegetarians

Young kids have peculiar eating habits to say the least. One week its nothing but peanut baby developmentbutter and jelly and the next week its all apples and oranges.  What if your child got into a food jag that eliminated meat? Perhaps you already are a vegetarian family and are wondering how many other little ones forgo fowl as well.  According to a new survey by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) more children are vegetarian than  previously anticipated.

New York Times Reports: Plenty of Guidelines, But Where's the Evidence?

If you are an avid researching parent, no doubt you at some point become confused and even frustrated by all the conflicting information in media on the “best practices″ for caring baby health, parentingfor babies and children.  In past year, we have seen many reversals on public stances for childcare as well as highly public changes of opinion by many leading health experts.  The New York Times reports on  that very  topic and the need to enhance  evidence based  healthcare guidelines.

New Food Guide Pyramid Guidelines for Preschoolers

It seems many parents are concerned about the eating habits of their little ones as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced new healthy eating guidelines for preschoolers.  Asserting their independence, preschoolers often have sporadic eating habits at best sometimes willing to try foods and other times refusing to try anything unfamiliar.
